Tallink Grupp will start operating a temporary regular ferry route between Helsinki and Riga from 26 June until 29 August, giving travellers in the region the unique opportunity for direct travel between Finland and Latvia by ship this summer.

The route will have frequent departures with the vessel sailing from both capital cities every other day throughout the summer. The arrival and departure times allow travellers from both countries to enjoy a leisurely voyage onboard Silja Serenade overnight and spend the day or possibly longer exploring the local sights at the destination.

Travellers from Estonia are able to join the trips from Helsinki and are also very welcome onboard. Since the decisions by the Estonian and Finnish governments this week to lift travel restrictions between the two countries and an anticipated increase in demand for travel options between Tallinn and Helsinki after 1 June, Tallink Grupp has decided to add extra departures and an additional vessel to the route from early June.

The decision has been made to meet the increased demand on the route and to ensure social distancing requirements are met on the vessels. Ticket sales for all new and additional departures will open from Monday, 1 June in the course of the day. As the virus situation improves in the region and some of the restrictions in place over the last few months are gradually lifted, the decision has been made by the authorities to allow ferry traffic to the islands to pass through its main harbour in Mariehamn once again from this week.

Baltic Princess and Galaxy will continue to operate on the Turku-Stockholm route, via Mariehamn, according to their normal schedule. The vessels predominantly provide cargo transportation, but also carry passengers who have checked and have the right to enter the country at their destination port. Passenger numbers are capped on these vessels similarly to other Tallink Grupp vessels currently operating on the Baltic sea. Tourism and leisure travel between the Nordic countries as well as between the Nordics and Baltics is still prohibited.

Passengers are reminded that currently only commuter traffic and travelling for unavoidable reasons only is permitted on the tallinn-Helsinki route. Leisure travel is currently still banned between Estonia and Finland. Before purchasing a ticket, passengers must check that they are permitted to enter the country at the destination port.

Passenger transport on ferries to Finland was suspended on 11 April at the request of the Finnish government in order to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Border control on the Finnish borders will remain in place also after 14 May until further notice from the Finnish government and the Finnish authorities will work out and publicise information regarding the detailed rules and guidance for border crossing from 14 May onwards in the next few days. The special trip is also needed for transporting goods between the two Baltic sea countries. Romantika will depart from Riga on the evening of Wednesday, 29 April at The vessel will then depart from Stockholm on the evening of Thursday, 30 April at All passengers returning to Riga will be required to self-isolate for a period of 14 days after arrival in Latvia according to the current rules of the Latvian authorities.

This restriction does not apply to cargo drivers. Both Latvian and Swedish cargo transporters are permitted to transport goods on these departures. Passengers must check that they currently have the right to enter the country of the destination port before purchasing a ticket for these departures.

Leisure travel is not permitted on these special departures. Cargo transporters are not required to fill in the form or obtain permissions for cargo transportation on these departures. All passengers must ensure that they are healthy and do not have any coronavirus symptoms prior to departure. Passengers who are ill or who are displaying symptoms will not be allowed to board the vessel.

Onboard the vessel strict measures are in place to prevent the spread of the virus. The departures are subject to a minimum capacity level of ticket and cargo sales being reached. Should the minimum capacity level not be reached, the company reserves the right to cancel the trips with full refund to the customers. The company currently has no information regarding the restoration of the Riga-Stockholm passenger ferry route, but will communicate any plans to start providing a regular service on this route again as soon as respective decisions are made.
